Non-Bladder Urinary Tumors: what to know
Urinary tract cancers that do not involve the bladder mainly include cancer of the kidney, renal pelvis, ureter, and urethra. Although less common than bladder cancer, these tumors have specific clinical features and risk factors.

Kidney Cancer
Kidney cancer originates from the uncontrolled proliferation of kidney cells, often from the tubules that filter blood. According to AIRTUM, there are about 12,600 new diagnoses per year in Italy, with a higher incidence in men and a peak onset around age 70.
Major risk factors include cigarette smoking, obesity, hypertension, and exposure to harmful chemicals. Early diagnosis is often difficult because many cases are asymptomatic in the early stages and are discovered incidentally during examinations for other conditions.

Tumors of the Renal Pelvis and Ureter.
The renal pelvis and ureter are lined with transitional cells, the same cells found in the bladder, making these tumors similar to urothelial carcinomas. They represent a small percentage of uro-genital cancers, with about 7-10% of renal tumors originating in the renal pelvis and about 5% in the ureter.
Risk factors include smoking, prolonged use of certain analgesics, exposure to industrial chemicals, and certain genetic conditions such as Lynch syndrome. The most common symptoms are hematuria (blood in the urine) and, in some cases, lumbar or colic pain. Diagnosis is based on imaging (such as CT with contrast medium) and cytologic or histologic analysis. The main treatment is surgical, often by radical nephroureterectomy.

Urethral Tumor
Urethral cancer is rare and most frequently diagnosed in old age. It can affect both men and women, with a higher incidence in women over the age of 50.
Risk factors include chronic urinary tract infections, urethritis, urethral stricture, and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Symptoms vary according to the location and size of the tumor and may include hematuria, dysuria (pain or difficulty during urination), palpable mass or swelling in the urethral area, and difficulty emptying the bladder.

Conclusions
Knowledge of the risk factors and symptoms associated with cancers of the urinary tract, excluding the bladder, is critical for early diagnosis and effective treatment.
