A comprehensive picture of oncology in the country
The Italian Association of Medical Oncology (AIOM), in collaboration with AIRTUM, AIOM Foundation and other scientific institutions, has published the long-awaited 14th edition of the report "The Numbers of Cancer in Italy 2024." It is a fundamental tool for understanding the state of oncology in our country, useful for physicians, patients, institutions and citizens.
The main data
- 390,100 new cancer diagnoses in 2024 (214,500 men and 175,600 women), a stable figure compared to previous years.
- The 5 most common cancers: breast, colorectal, lung, prostate and bladder.
- About half of cancer patients can recover, thanks to earlier diagnosis and increasingly effective therapies.
- Decline in cancer mortality in young adults (20-49 years old): -21.4% in women, -28% in men over the past 15 years.
- There are 3.7 million Italians living after a cancer diagnosis, or 6.2% of the population.

Challenges to be faced
- Cancer screenings still uneven: breast (49% coverage), cervix (47%) and colorectal (32%), with large territorial disparities.
- Risk factors still widespread: smoking (24% of the population), overweight (33%), obesity (10%), risky alcohol (18%) and increasing sedentary lifestyle.

Focus: tumors of the urinary tract
In 2024, according to AIOM data, bladder cancer is among the most frequent cancers, with an estimated 31,016 new cases. Specifically, among men it is the fourth most diagnosed cancer (25,230 cases) and is among the leading causes of cancer prevalence in Italy, with more than 300,000 people living after a diagnosis of this disease.
Urothelial tumors (kidneys, ureters, bladder) often have no obvious symptoms in the early stages. The appearance of hematuria (blood in the urine), which is often underestimated, may be the only early sign. For this reason, it is crucial to activate targeted screening pathways, especially in at-risk individuals: smokers, workers exposed to carcinogens, individuals older than 40 years or with previous urologic malignancies.

Prevention and early detection: the most effective weapons
Modern oncology confirms that early intervention can make a difference. It is in this direction that Urine24, the first home urinary cytology test kit with telematic reporting, fits.
With Urine24:
- Conveniently collect your urine samples at home on 3 consecutive days.
- The specimen is analyzed by thin-layer cytology according to The Paris System method, with double review by the pathologist.
- Receive the report via email, securely.
Urine24 is indicated for the early detection of urinary tract cancers in individuals who are symptomatic (hematuria), smokers, exposed to carcinogens, over 40, or have a history of cancer.
